Flughafen Zürich AG, the owner and operator of Zurich Airport, Switzerland's largest airport and one of Europe’s key aviation hubs, was keen to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. With visions of bringing best-practice experience operating airports in Latin America, Europe and South Asia combined with Swiss hospitality to the region, Flughafen Zürich AG wanted to contribute significantly to airport development in emerging markets in Southeast Asia.

Through market research, Flughafen Zürich AG saw many investment opportunities in Vietnam, one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in Southeast Asia. The market growth was driven by rising middle income class, booming airlines industry and Government’s established policies and formal mechanisms for providing support to PPP projects. Flughafen Zürich AG was one of the first European airport operators engaged in discussions with Vietnam Government.

Our team of professional was commissioned to work with Flughafen Zürich AG on an array of business advisory services from providing insightful market intelligence, developing business strategy to leading discussion and negotiation with the Government. We capitalised investment and operation opportunity in both tier 1 and 2 airports across Vietnam, forging potential partnership with state-run airport authorities and established private airport operators.

We helped Flughafen Zürich AG shape business objectives and offerings aligned with the Government’s master plan to improve airport service quality, enhance the handling capacity of current airports, construct and expand new/ existing airports as well as strengthen institutional capacity. We worked with Flughafen Zürich AG on mid and long-term business strategy with emphasis on infrastructure planning, airport operation and commercial development-

Puma Energy, a subsidiary of the global energy enterprise Trafigura, is interested in expanding their portfolio besides existing bitumen business in Vietnam. Through market studies, it recognised the potential of jet fuel market due to the country’s booming aviation industry and the current duopoly model of state-owned enterprises and insufficient supply chain would soon put a strain on jet fuel supplies across the country.

Puma Energy was keen to invest in jet fuel hydrant system and a new tank farm to solve the existing issues of jet fuel supply chain. With experiences operating jet fuel business in 84 airports managing a system of refuelling vehicles and hydrants plus a network of 100+ fuel import sea terminals globally, it is committed to bringing the reliable, competitive fuel supply and management system with international standards to Vietnam.

We, together with Puma Energy, worked with the state-run airport enterprise on feasibility study of jet fuel hydrant system and depots. Our team of professionals provided corporate advisory on strategic business development and performed due diligence on green field location, structure financial and business models. We navigated local laws and regulations to ensure operational, technical and economic feasibility.

Puma Energy was able to provide a comprehensive development plan of jet fuel hydrant system while suggested a safer and more efficient improvement of jet fuel supply chain lessening the use of fuel tanker trucks. A new jet fuel import sea terminal was also proposed serving as a central tank farm to existing Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airport. Puma Energy and state-run airport enterprise took this opportunity to explore potential joint-venture to break up duopoly-
